Purwoceng is a herbaceous plant whose roots are reported like commercial medicinal as an aphrodisiac, diuretics, and tonic. Purwoceng is an original plant of Indonesia that lived endemic in mountainous areas. Purwoceng is a wild plant that grows in the under the tree or forest, so the plant growth is not optimal when the plant gets direct sunlight irradiation. This study aimed to obtain the level of shade and water stress that can increase crop yields of purwoceng. The research was conducted in the village of Gondosuli, Tawangmangu, Karanganyar from December 2012 until May 2013. This research using Completely Randomized Design with two treatments, level of shade (without shade, 25% shade, 50% shade and 75% shade) and level of water stress (no stress, 75% water supply from field capacity, 50% water supply from field capacity and 25% water supply from field capacity). This research were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) level of 5%.The results showed that the plant purwoceng without shading and without watering stress produce the best growth of young leaf, petiole number, root length, fresh weight and dry weight of plants. Difference treatment of shade and water stress levels had no effect on the growth canopy of purwoceng.
